Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular aesthetic procedure designed to help eliminate stubborn fat from targeted areas of the body. The treatment eliminates fat bulges to help improve the body profile and create a more proportionate contour. This body contouring option became popular in the 1970s with doctors helping countless patients experience excellent results with minimal risk. Since then, liposuction has benefited greatly from advancements in aesthetic medicine. These days patients can take advantage of new technologies and advanced techniques to achieve their cosmetic goals with minimal downtime.

Many patients choose liposuction to reach their cosmetic goals in combination with good nutrition and a workout regimen. Other patients choose this cosmetic procedure to enhance their facial beauty or body’s outline.

The procedure is effective on common problem areas, such as the following:

  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Knees
  • Ankles
  • Neck and double chin

At Total Body, many of our patients find liposuction to be an optimal treatment after weight loss. We recommend our patients are close to a healthy, stable weight before considering any form of liposuction.

Liposuction Candidates

The best candidates are patients who have fat in hard-to-lose spots like the double chin area, upper arms, hips, back, thighs, and abdomen.

Good candidates are also within 20 pounds of their optimal weight but haven’t been successful in eliminating stubborn fat through healthy lifestyle choices. With a complimentary consultation, Total Body of Atlanta helps patients determine if our liposuction options are suitable to achieve their desired results.

Traditional Liposuction

This time-tested technology has been effective in helping many men and women achieve their aesthetic goals. Compared to other cosmetic surgeries, it is minimally invasive, employing small incisions to gain access to unwanted fat pads. Our board-certified physician, Dr. Dwayne Watkins, will then use a special suction device (cannula) to eliminate excess fat deposits and deliver a sleek, slender and toned contour.

Tumescent Liposuction

With tumescent liposuction, a solution containing saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine is injected into the treatment area before removing the fat with a cannula. This technique offers tremendous advantages over other methods: it can greatly increase patient comfort, decrease bleeding, and reduce damage to the surrounding tissues. It also helps loosen the fat for easier removal. General anesthesia is also not needed with tumescent liposuction, eliminating the major risks traditionally associated with liposuction.

How can Liposuction Help with Your Weight Loss Plan?

Liposuction FAQs

How much fat volume is removed?

Dr. Watkins is careful to remove just the right amount of fat in the target area to achieve a proportionate outcome that looks natural. This amount will depend on factors unique to each patient and will be discussed during your consultation.

Is liposuction a weight loss procedure?

No. Dr. Watkins uses liposuction for body contouring on patients who are close to or at a healthy body weight. The purpose of liposuction is to remove stubborn fat that does not respond to a healthy lifestyle. Also, the best results are in areas where the skin is elastic and the muscle has good tone.

What happens if I gain weight after the procedure?

The fat cells removed during liposuction cannot return, but liposuction does not prevent the patient from gaining weight in the future. If you gain weight you will get bigger, but the contour will remain the same in the treatment area. In other words, your shape in this area will remain the same, just larger. The treated areas will always be relatively slimmer compared to the rest of your body.
