Resolutions are what drive people to do better. Yet, only 8% of individuals achieve their New Year’s resolutions.

If you’re part of the 92% of individuals who seems to fail at following through with personal, self-improvement goals, don’t give up just yet. You make healthy resolutions because you want to be healthy, you want to feel good inside and you want to be happier. These reasons can be your motivation to push through with your goals.

In addition to your motivation, try these tips to help you get back on track with your New Year’s resolutions:

  • Be More Specific

Just like in goal planning, you need to be specific with your reasons. It’s not enough to just say “I want to be slim” or “I want to be healthy” as your reasons. Instead, understand the “why” to really drive you. For instance, instead of merely saying, “I want to be slim,” say “I want to lose 260 pounds to be slim so I can join a beauty contest”, or “I want to fit in a size 4 dress for a wedding”. When you’re specific with your reasons, you have something to look forward to, and that can help you push further. Otherwise, you’ll just go through with the motions never knowing that you’ve already reached your goal, which could eventually deflate your motivation.

  • Create a Plan

An action plan should help you measure your results, big and small, as you work through your goals. Similar to goal setting, you also need to be specific with your action plan. For instance, if you want to work out five days a week, you should include in your plan to wake up at least one hour earlier to jog.

Once you have an action plan, be sure to log your plan on your phone, planner, and calendar. Make sure to set reminders as well, so you don’t forget it. At the end of each week, evaluate your plans and make adjustments when necessary to keep your momentum up.

  • Keep Accountability in Mind

It helps to report to someone weekly. For instance, you can send your progress to your friend or family member. It’s easier to stick to your goals when there’s someone who monitors your progress.

  • Join a Program

The best way to succeed is to seek help. In addition to a gym membership, join a medically supervised weight loss program, such as the one Total Body offers. With professional help, you’ll receive the right guidance to help you reach your health goals safely and effectively.

It’s normal for people to fail. What’s more important is that you get up and move forward.
